Photographing Children

Nice technique!

Children are some of the cutest people around, and we love to take pictures of them. Besides having a lot of patience, there are many things we can do to get great shots of babies and children.

Stoop to their level
Children tend to live closer to the ground than adults. Often it is advantageous to get down to their eye level when taking photographs. It is also good to get to their level behaviourally, which means making a fool of yourself while sitting on the floor. But who is going to know when you get that great shot?

Down at kids-level

Play with composition
Kids are definitely not boring, so why should photos of them be? Not every photo needs to be centered. Creative composition can help to emphasize movement and size (smallness in particular).

Get up close and personal
Filling the frame with a child's face can create a powerful impact. Try it!

Take candid shots
Not all photos have to be posed. Often the best photos of children are taken when they have no idea there is a camera around.

Use family and friends
Photographing children with their friends and relatives helps to create long-lasting memories. It also tends to keep your kids relaxed and not self-conscious.

Red-eye reduction is helpful
Red-eye reductionThe younger a person is, the more likely they are to get "red-eye" in flash photographs. Babies in particular tend to be wide-eyed and have larger pupils, which is the cause of red-eye. If your camera has a red-eye reduction mode, try to use it when photographing the young'ns. It also helps to take pictures in as bright of conditions as possible, which could mean flicking on a few more lights before taking photos. Brighter light makes the pupils smaller. Lastly, not looking directly at the camera will reduce red-eye as well.

Take lots of shots
With young babies in particular, getting a particular pose captured can really be a challenge. This is where digital photography really shines. To get the photo below, I left my two-week old daughter in the car seat upon returning home, set the camera to take continuous pictures, and took about 50 shots over a 2-minute period! In those 50 were 4 or 5 precious shots that have been printed several times for relatives and friends. When using this technique, make sure you have plenty of memory on hand.

Take lots of shots

Go outside
In the backyard, at the beach, at the park, in the snow, at Playland, in the forest. Kids love being outside, and your best chance at a fantastically lit, spontaneous photo will probably come outdoors.

Break all the rules
None of the tips above is a law. Do whatever you need to do to get those great kid shots. The key is to try a lot of different things, then print the best shots.
