Mode Dial

Please do touch that dial.

Many digital cameras have a handy mode dial on them with a bunch of little pictures that look like this:

Nikon Coolpix mode dial

If you have taken our Intro to Digital Photography course, chances are you are familiar with this dial. If not, please sign up or at least pull out your manual and check what these little pictures mean.

The example above is from a Nikon camera. Clockwise, it accesses set up mode, movie clips, manual mode, automatic mode, scene modes (for various lighting conditions such as back lighting, sunset, indoor, snow and beach, close up and more), portrait mode, landscape mode, sports mode, and night portrait mode. Shooting in Auto mode all the time is alright, but with a quick turn of the mode dial you can dramatically improve your pictures in a variety of conditions where the camera manufacturers have made presets for you!
